We would like to share with you important information on the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) from the Connecticut Department of Public Health. These tips are especially important as you spend more time indoors during the winter months.

- Install a carbon monoxide detector near sleeping areas
- Know the symptoms of CO poisoning

- Change batteries at least once a year and replace detectors every 5-10 years as the sensors degrade
- Have your heating systems, chimney flues, gas appliances, and generators checked every year
- Never use portable generators, pressure washer engines, or other gasoline-powered equipment (including tools) inside your home, garage, carport, basement, or other enclosed spaces.
- Place portable generators at least 20 feet from your home
- Use gasoline-powered equipment outside and away from doors, windows, or air-intake vents
- Make sure inlets and outlets for your furnace are free of snow
- After a snow storm, make sure your car's exhaust pipe is clear
- Opening windows and doors, and operating fans is not sufficient to prevent buildup of CO in a home
